Jamal Adams: Firing Bowles won't solve all of Jets' problems
Safety Jamal Adams isn't pinning the New York Jets' 3-8 record on the shoulders of head coach Todd Bowles.
"There are other problems in that building. I feel for him. I really do," Adams told NJ.com's Darryl Slater. "It’s not his problems that are going on right now. Hopefully, it’s going to change next year. We’ve got to change it. It needs to be changed, because to me, we’re running out of time."
Adams believes the culture of the organization needs to be altered in the offseason.
"If something in life is going wrong and you don’t fix the problem, it’s not going to change," Adams said. "So there needs to be change."
After starting the season 3-3, the Jets have dropped five straight games, leading to speculation that Bowles won't be around for 2019.
Bowles has a 23-36 record over four seasons with the Jets. The front office may be looking for a coach better suited to develop future franchise quarterback Sam Darnold.
Adams, the sixth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, is ready to have an honest conversation among players about the team's faults.
"If people don’t speak up, it’s going to stay the same," he said. "We all have to speak up, and we all have to say what’s on our minds. It’s not really time for: ‘Oh, don’t say this, don’t say that.’ No, we need to say this, and we need to say that."
The LSU alum has been a bright spot on a Jets defense ranked 23rd in yards allowed per game. He's accumulated 88 tackles, three forced fumbles, and one interception this season, and Pro Football Focus ranks him third overall in his position group.
