Jones hopes to keep Cowboys' young stars: 'Hell, I want a bigger boat'
Riding on the strong play of multiple young stars, the Dallas Cowboys turned a 10-6 season into an NFC East title and an appearance in the divisional round.
Now that their playoff run is over, the subject has changed to those players' future paydays. Quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott have emerged as offensive leaders and are still playing on their rookie contracts. This offseason is the first time the team can extend them, and the same goes for 26-year-old Pro Bowl defenders Demarcus Lawrence and Byron Jones.
Speaking on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he'd like to retain each of his stars but acknowledged it could be challenging.
"... Do we want Zeke in the foreseeable future on the Dallas Cowboys? The answer is yes. That'd be madness to think any differently," Jones said. "You ask a question about Dak and the answer is yes, I want him in the short term and the long term. ... Do you want Lawrence for the foreseeable future? Byron Jones? A lot of these guys, yes.
"Now, getting there? Hell, I want a bigger boat," Jones added.
Jones reportedly recently purchased a $250-million, 357-foot superyacht.
Prescott just completed the third year of a four-year contract that pays him $2.7 million. Elliott is entering the fourth year of a $24-million deal, Jones earned $8 million on a four-year pact and will play 2019 on a $6-million option, and Lawrence played 2018 on a $17-million franchise tag.
