Report: NFL to consider judgment challenge following no-call controversy

The NFL is expected to consider a proposal that would grant coaches limited challenges for incorrect judgment calls as the league attempts to navigate the missed penalty controversy from the NFC Championship Game, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The proposal would reportedly also recommend that teams losing such a challenge be subject to a penalty or a time run-off in order to disincentivize coaches abusing the new rule.

The league's competition committee - of which New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is a member - will find a way to get the rule passed in some form, a source predicted to Schefter; other proposals will be considered but the push for judgment challenges "seems to have some traction."

Late in the NFC title game, Los Angeles Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman made blatant contact with Saints wide receiver Tommylee Lewis prior to the arrival of a pass from Drew Brees. Despite the apparent pass interference, no penalty was called and the Rams eventually won a trip to the Super Bowl in overtime.
