McVay takes blame for SB LIII loss: 'I got outcoached'

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay's much-lauded offense managed just three points in Sunday's Super Bowl LIII loss, and postgame he said "I got outcoached."

"I just never enabled us to get into a rhythm offensively," McVay said after the 13-3 loss to the New England Patriots, according to Nick Shook of NFL.com. "You know we didn't have any third-down conversions really the whole first half. They did a good job, and it seemed that anytime we got a little bit of a positive play then we'd end up having a penalty or move ourselves back.

"So, I think a lot of it is a result of some of the things they did but then also the play selection. I was not pleased at all with my feel for the flow of the game and kind of making some adjustments as the game unfolded and with giving ourselves a chance at some success and put some points on the board. Credit to them, they did a good job, and I certainly didn't do enough for us."

The Rams averaged the second-most points (32.9) in the league during the regular season, but McVay couldn't find an answer in critical situations, as L.A. went 3-for-13 on third down. New England significantly outgained the Rams in total yards (407 to 260).

McVay also couldn't help his young quarterback, Jared Goff, when the Patriots' ever-shifting defense seemed to confuse him. The third-year passer threw a crushing late interception, and he finished 19-of-38 passing for 229 yards.

The 33-year-old coach said the pain of losing hasn't sunk in yet.

"I'm almost numb ... they did a great job but it was mostly a result of me doing a poor job calling plays and not giving us a chance to win," said McVay, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "I don't know how you ever get over this."
