The Houston Texans aren't close to signing impending free agents Jadeveon Clowney and Tyrann Mathieu to long-term contracts, sources told Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.
Houston is expected to franchise-tag Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in 2014, to keep him off the open market. The 26-year-old edge defender is coming off a nine-sack campaign, during which he earned his third straight Pro Bowl selection.
Mathieu, also 26, is more likely to hit free agency. The safety inked a one-year deal with the Texans last offseason after the Arizona Cardinals released him. He had 89 tackles and two interceptions in 16 games.
The Texans have reportedly kept in contact with each player's representatives and hope to sign both.
