Giants' Shurmur backed Beckham trade: 'It's good for both parties'

New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur says he supported the trade that shocked the NFL world last week and sent Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns.

"My reaction is always the case with trades, it’s good for both parties," Shurmur told Paul Schwartz of the New York Post. "We feel good about what we got. We got a starting safety (Jabrill Peppers), we got a first-round pick, and we got our third-round pick. We felt it was good for us and, because we were able to come to an agreement, Cleveland thought it was good for them."

Shurmur insisted he and general manager Dave Gettleman were in complete agreement regarding the move.

"Everything we do behind the scenes, coaching and roster building, is collaborative," he said.

The Giants have kept busy this offseason. Along with trading Beckham, they also acquired guard Kevin Zeitler from the Browns in exchange for defensive end Olivier Vernon, and they signed receiver Golden Tate and safety Antoine Bethea in free agency.

"With regard to Odell and even O.V., it was business," Shurmur said. "I know from my standpoint on a personal level, anybody I’ve ever worked with I wish the best for when they leave. I’m hopeful O.V. and Odell can go to Cleveland, have an impact and help their team win games. That’s where it’s at."

The Giants now own the No. 6 and No. 17 picks in the draft to help improve on their 5-11 regular-season record. Although it's likely Eli Manning will remain at quarterback to start the 2019 campaign, the draft can still shape the future of the franchise.

"We’ve gone into this offseason knowing we have to build," Shurmur said. "I don’t like the word 'rebuild.' We’re building. Dave has a plan, we have a plan, and we’re just moving forward."
