Browns sign former Apollos QB Gilbert
The Cleveland Browns have signed former Orlando Apollos quarterback Garrett Gilbert after an impressive stint in the Alliance of American Football, the team announced Friday.
Through eight weeks, Gilbert led the Apollos to a league-best 7-1 record and was the AAF's leading passer with 2,152 yards. He also threw 13 touchdowns to just three interceptions.
Gilbert, 27, was drafted by the then-St. Louis Rams in the sixth round of the 2014 draft before bouncing around the league.
He spent time with the New England Patriots, Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, and Carolina Panthers, and appeared in one game for Carolina last season, completing two passes for 40 yards.
The Browns have their franchise quarterback in Baker Mayfield but have little depth behind him, with 35-year-old Drew Stanton the only other passer on the roster.
