XFL will use 3 options on extra-point attempts

The XFL is getting creative and tossing aside some traditional football rules.

Commissioner Oliver Luck said teams that score a touchdown will have the option to attempt a one-point conversion from the 2-yard line, a two-point try from the 5-yard line, or a three-point attempt from the 10-yard line.

"We literally have a nine-point touchdown," Luck said to Mike Florio on the ProFootballTalk podcast Monday. "We think that's valuable because teams that historically are down by let's say three scores, well guess what, if it's a 16-point or a 17-point differential, you're really looking at a two-score game theoretically."

The league is also experimenting with overtime rules, and the extra quarter will feature 44 players on the field at the same time.

Each team's offense and defense will square off on opposite ends of the field and alternate possessions, with the offenses receiving up to five attempts at a two-point conversion. A defensive turnover is worth one point, and the team with the most points at the end of the shootout wins.

Luck also mentioned that the XFL will use a 30-second play clock, leading to a quicker pace of play. Games will be limited to three hours, too, including overtime.

The XFL is slated to kick off in February 2020.
