7 bold predictions for the NFL draft
With the NFL draft on Thursday, theScore's football editors make seven bold predictions about what will transpire.
No WR or RB taken in 1st round
With the high-end talent in this draft class largely on the defensive side of the ball, NFL clubs will eschew adding offensive weapons for at least the first 32 selections. Due to the lack of a clear-cut feature tailback or a consensus best player among wideouts, teams will prefer to wait and address their offensive needs on Day 2. - David P. Woods
T.J. Hockenson makes history
Vernon Davis was taken with the sixth overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers 13 years ago. To find a tight end drafted higher, you have to go all the way back to two years after the 1970 AFL-NFL merger when Riley Odoms went fifth overall. Hockenson has been rumored as a potential top-10 pick, but he'll exceed expectations and sneak inside the top five thanks to a decreasing concern with positional value at the top of the draft, as well as his rare combination of an immediately translatable skill set and an elite upside he's barely begun to discover - similar to Colts guard Quenton Nelson last year. - Jack Browne
Giants trade up to No. 1 overall
The Dave Gettleman show continues on draft night with a deal that moves New York from No. 6 to the first overall pick. The Giants also own the 17th overall selection, as well as three Day 2 picks, and any (or all) could be used to climb five spots. Meanwhile, Arizona decides Josh Rosen is its quarterback of the future and moves down to select a top defensive prospect. Determined to land Eli Manning's successor, the Giants kick off the draft by selecting Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins, or Daniel Jones. - Mike Alessandrini
10 offensive linemen picked in 1st round
It won't get as much attention as the more glamorous position groups, but this year's offensive line class is quietly stacked. Given the lack of such depth in recent years and the resultant need around the league for linemen, it shouldn't come as a surprise when they fly off the board early and often. Jonah Williams, Andre Dillard, Jawaan Taylor, Cody Ford, and Garrett Bradbury should be Day 1 locks. Add in Dalton Risner, Chris Lindstrom, Elgton Jenkins, Erik McCoy, and Tytus Howard - as teams look to ensure they don't miss out on one of the top talents - and a total of 10 offensive linemen will be selected in the first round, matching the all-time draft record set back in 1968. - Dan Wilkins
Greedy Williams goes in top 5
The first five players in the draft have appeared to be locked in for months, and Williams - once projected to be among those picks - has fallen in many mock drafts. Williams is no longer even the consensus best corner and reportedly hasn't taken a top-30 visit or a private workout. It's a classic case of teams slow-playing their desired pick. In the end, a team gets greedy and takes the LSU star much earlier than expected. - Michael McClymont
Chiefs trade Tyreek Hill
Rumblings out of Kansas City that the Chiefs are open to moving the Cheetah will prove to be true, as they'll part with the All-Pro receiver for a first-round pick before his possible legal problems and contract requests catch up. Andy Reid has made plenty of proactive trades before, as he's sent stars such as Donovan McNabb, Sheldon Brown, Alex Smith, and Marcus Peters packing from his teams before they were ready. Hill will be next, ensuring the Chiefs have all the money they need to lock up Patrick Mahomes when the quarterback's rookie deal expires. - Alex Chippin
Only 2 QBs selected in 1st round
Five quarterbacks were drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft and three were taken in 2017. This year, however, NFL teams will be wary of the position group and select only two on Day 1. Kyler Murray and Dwayne Haskins will be nabbed within the top 32 (sorry, Drew Lock) as the rest of the league opts to capitalize on a strong defensive class. - Karan Gill
