Rams strength coach found not guilty of sexual battery
A jury found Los Angeles Rams strength and conditioning coach Ted Rath not guilty of three counts of sexual battery Friday, according to Megan Diskin of the Ventura County Star.
A neighbor accused Rath of touching her buttocks and genitalia while she slept in her bed. Rath and a group of others had visited the woman's Moorpark, Calif., home following a fundraiser and a stop at a local bar.
The woman testified that she was awoken by Rath touching her and pretended to mistake him for her husband, stopping the advances. Rath pleaded not guilty and maintained that he didn't remember the events of that evening. His attorneys argued that his memory problems resulted from a combination of alcohol consumption and the side effects of medication he was taking after suffering a stroke.
The 35-year-old would have faced a year in custody for each misdemeanor offense against him and a lifetime registration as a sex offender.
"All I can say is that I'm very grateful the jury was quick in their decision," said Rath's attorney Vicki Podberesky. "They saw right through the prosecution's case and went right to the truth. And that's all this is about."
Rath has been on a leave of absence from the Rams and did not attend the Super Bowl in February. At the time, the team said he was recovering from a medical procedure.
In a statement Friday, the Rams said: "Now that the trial is complete, we will revisit Ted Rath's status. In addition, we will continue to assist the NFL as it completes its separate investigation."
Rath was highlighted in an NFL Films video in January in which he was referred to as Sean McVay's "Get Back Coach," tasked with keeping the Rams head coach off the field of play during games.
