Jimmy Garoppolo won't play in the preseason opener but will receive full medical clearance in his recovery from an ACL tear, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday, according to Logan Reardon of NFL.com.
The quarterback was undergoing a physical as Shanahan delivered the news. Garoppolo will participate in full-team drills throughout training camp. The Niners will decide how to deploy the 27-year-old in the preseason at a later time.
Garoppolo tore his ACL in the third week of the 2018 season. He threw for 718 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions before going down.
San Francisco will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the regular-season opener Sept. 8.
