Report: Redskins discussing Trent Williams trade

The Washington Redskins are discussing a potential Trent Williams trade as the Pro Bowl left tackle continues his holdout from training camp, a source told Jeff Howe of The Athletic.

Williams reportedly grew discontent with the Redskins early in the offseason because of how they handled a medical situation. Williams had a growth, initially feared to be malignant, removed from his head in the spring. He hasn't appeared at any mandatory team activities since.

Washington signed veteran left tackle Donald Penn on Wednesday, a possible sign the team doesn't expect Williams to return soon.

Williams, 31, has been one of the league's top tackles since he was drafted fourth overall in 2010, though injuries have plagued him the last two years.

There's a sense around the league that the New England Patriots could pursue Williams because the team lacks depth at the position that protects Tom Brady's blindside, according to Howe. The Patriots lost Trent Brown in free agency, and they appear ready to start Isaiah Wynn - their 2018 first-round pick who missed his rookie season with a torn Achilles - at left tackle.

It's unclear what Washington would seek in return for Williams. There are two seasons remaining on the five-year, $68-million contract he signed in 2015.
