New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is determined to keep things competitive between himself and Tom Brady, even if it means not sending a birthday wish to his rival.

While shooting a commercial in July, Darnold was asked if he'd be willing to join other NFL players in a video wishing Brady a happy 42nd birthday. His response, according to Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson, was "No."

"I'm going to get every competitive edge I can, because he's going to do the same thing," Darnold said this week. "He's the ultimate competitor. He's exactly where I want to be when I’m his age. To chase that, I can't be giving him anything."

Darnold felt that by participating in the video, he would've been giving something to the New England Patriots quarterback.

"For sure," Darnold said. "If I see him after a game, I'll tell him good game and all that stuff. But I don't want to give him anything. Especially to him. No."

The Jets and Patriots will meet in Week 3 of the regular season on Sept. 22 and again in Week 7.
