Examining Daniel Jones' up-and-down Week 2 preseason performance
Calls for Daniel Jones to overtake Eli Manning dissipated Friday after the New York Giants' rookie quarterback was as frustrating as he was promising against the Chicago Bears.
For the second straight week, Jones started hot upon relieving Manning, who went 4-for-4 and threw a touchdown in one series of action. The rookie hit on his first three passes, including a 40-yard heave down the sideline to Cody Latimer.
Immediately after that highlight, however, came the first lowlight. With the Giants hurrying to the line to keep the Bears from challenging the previous play, a jittery Jones botched the snap and gave the ball to Chicago.
Jones appeared rattled by his first NFL turnover. His first pass on the Giants' next possession fell well short of an open Golden Tate and he misfired on the next two throws after that.
Another careless turnover provided the second lowlight for Jones, who had been the talk of the league after a flawless preseason debut one week ago.
The Duke product did rebound before halftime, leading New York on back-to-back scoring drives against the Bears' reserves. He lobbed a beautiful ball for TJ Jones in the end zone, producing a touchdown on his final pass of the evening.
Overall, Jones made good decisions with the football and was relatively accurate from the pocket. But, as is the case with most young quarterbacks, he had issues with ball security and struggled to bounce back quickly from mistakes.

The sixth overall pick did nothing against the Bears to soil Giants' fans hopes that he can eventually take the torch from Manning. But as New York officially hit the halfway point of the preseason, the brewing quarterback controversy the Giants tried to extinguish last week cooled off on its own.
