Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James will begin the season on injured reserve, and he'll miss at least the first eight weeks, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
James underwent surgery on Thursday to repair a stress fracture in his foot. He was given an initial recovery timetable of three months after suffering the injury last week.
James finished second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting in 2018 after accumulating 105 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and three interceptions.
The Chargers open the regular season on Sept. 8 against the Indianapolis Colts.
