Report: Zeke deal not close, Cowboys frustrated by latest talks

With the first week of the regular season looming, the Dallas Cowboys and Ezekiel Elliott appear no closer to a new contract.

The Cowboys are reportedly frustrated by Sunday afternoon's negotiations with their holdout running back because Elliott's side was less willing to compromise than they expected, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports.

While talks continued later Sunday, an extension isn't close, a source told Jane Slater of NFL Network.

Asked what was holding up a deal, Slater's source said "everything," echoing the same message from a month ago.

Earlier Sunday, Robinson reported the two sides were honing in on an agreement.

Dallas reportedly offered to make Elliott the second-highest-paid running back behind Todd Gurley. However, the two-time rushing leader apparently wants to beat Gurley's annual average of $14.38 million.

While both parties were reportedly aiming to finalize a new deal over the weekend, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Wednesday that he was prepared for Elliott to miss games.

Dallas opens the season at home Sunday against the New York Giants.
