Report: Dolphins allow Minkah Fitzpatrick to seek trade
The Miami Dolphins have granted second-year defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick permission to seek a trade, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.
However, Miami could have a tough time finding a trade partner, as its asking price on the former Alabama star is reportedly too high.
A Dolphins official said the team isn't actively shopping Fitzpatrick but didn't deny that he's been allowed to look for a new home.
Fitzpatrick, the 11th overall pick in the 2018 draft, enjoyed a fine rookie year but has voiced displeasure over his new role under first-year head coach Brian Flores.
Last season, Fitzpatrick played 40 percent of his snaps as the slot cornerback, yielding a passer rating against of 49.7, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. In Week 1 of the 2019 campaign, Fitzpatrick spent most of his afternoon against the Baltimore Ravens playing near the tackle box.
"I'm not 215 pounds, 220 pounds," Fitzpatrick said in the preseason. "So playing in the box isn't best suited for me, but that's what coach is asking me to do."
The Dolphins have reportedly received trade requests from multiple veteran players since losing 59-10 to the Ravens. Miami gutted its roster before the season, sending established players such as T.J. McDonald, Laremy Tunsil, Kenny Stills, and Kiko Alonso packing while bracing for a full-scale rebuild.
Fitzpatrick broke up nine passes and notched two interceptions as a rookie. He made six tackles in his 2019 debut.
