Report: Newton battling Lisfranc injury, could be out a while
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is dealing with a Lisfranc injury that could sideline him for an extended period of time, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported.
Newton is reportedly rehabbing with hopes that he'll be able to avoid surgery. The former MVP has already been ruled out for Week 4, and Kyle Allen is set to start for the second straight game when the Panthers face the Houston Texans.
Newton sprained his foot in the preseason. He recovered in time for Carolina's opener but then informed the team that he'd aggravated the injury after Week 2.
The 30-year-old struggled over the first two weeks, completing just 56.2% of his passes and failing to throw a touchdown while committing one interception.
Lisfranc injuries are known to come with relatively lengthy recovery timelines.
