Melvin Gordon could rejoin the Los Angeles Chargers earlier than he initially planned, though he hasn't yet made any final decisions, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The running back was believed to be targeting Weeks 6-8 for his return from a contract-related holdout.

The Chargers have gotten by sans Gordon, with the tandem of Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson averaging 5.4 yards per carry through the first three games. Ekeler also ranks second on the team in catches (19), receiving yards (208), and receiving touchdowns (two).

Gordon previously received permission to seek a trade, but he evidently hasn't found a team willing to cough up the necessary assets to acquire him and give him the gigantic extension he wants. The Chargers broke off contract negotiations with Gordon right before the season after making no headway over the preceding weeks.

Gordon, a Pro Bowler last season, rushed for 885 yards and 10 touchdowns across 12 contests in 2018. He's averaged 4 yards per carry for his career.

The former first-round pick is in the fifth and final year of his rookie deal.
