Redskins' Haskins not sweating bench role while other rookies start

Washington Redskins rookie Dwayne Haskins isn't losing patience on the bench, despite seeing other quarterbacks from his draft class experience early-season success.

"It's easy to look at the rookie class and be like, 'Rookies are playing, why am I not playing?'" Haskins told ESPN's John Keim. "I want to be like Tom Brady and Drew Brees and that's something that doesn't happen overnight. Tom didn't play at first; Aaron Rodgers didn't play at first."

Haskins, the 15th overall pick in April, has watched from the sideline as his team has stumbled out of the gate to an 0-3 mark. Redskins fans have clamored for the former Ohio State star to replace Case Keenum, but head coach Jay Gruden indicated after the latter's five-turnover performance versus the Chicago Bears that he isn't mulling a quarterback switch.

Haskins is the only signal-caller from the first round still waiting to make his NFL debut. The early returns on Kyler Murray and Daniel Jones have been promising, while Gardner Minshew has been the talk of the town in Jacksonville.

Daniel Jones Giants 4/0
Gardner Minshew Jaguars 5/1

"I know I can play well and play at a high level," Haskins said. "But I want to keep getting better. I feel I can be really, really good. I want to be a great quarterback, one of those guys you talk about for years to come. That's not going to happen overnight.

"Everyone has a different path and journey. That's good for (the other rookies) and that's the situation they're in and I'm not."

Even if Keenum does eventually get replaced, Washington may turn to another veteran in Colt McCoy over Haskins, who hasn't taken any first-team reps in practice.

"There's a difference between being patient and not working," Haskins said. "I'm hungry. I want to play. As a competitor that's how you want to operate. But you want to be in the best position to succeed and that's what I'm waiting for. ... I feel good, I feel I can help the team win. I'm ready in case anything happens."
