Melvin Gordon is expected to be active for Week 4, but the Los Angeles Chargers plan to only use him in an emergency, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
The news comes two days after head coach Anthony Lynn claimed "there's a chance" Gordon would receive snaps versus the Miami Dolphins.
The 26-year-old tailback ended his holdout on Thursday. He hadn't participated in team drills prior to this week.
Lynn said there was "no doubt" Gordon would be the Chargers' starting running back when he's ready to handle a full workload.
Los Angeles will be without Justin Jackson on Sunday due to a calf injury, so Austin Ekeler is expected to handle the bulk of the touches.
