Jon Gruden sympathizes with brother Jay after firing: 'Welcome to the club'
Jay Gruden isn't the first member of his family to be fired from an NFL job, and his brother, Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden, reminded him and the media of that on Tuesday.
The Washington Redskins relieved Jay of his head coaching duties Monday, and his older brother offered some words of sympathy.
"I got a lot of respect for my brother, obviously, and disappointed for him getting fired," Jon said. "But, my dad's been fired, I've been fired, Jay's been fired ... welcome to the club, bro."
Jon, who was seemingly in a good mood after leading his team to an upset win over the Chicago Bears in Week 5, would not speak on the possibility of his brother joining his staff.
The Gruden brothers previously coached together with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2002-2008. Jon served as head coach, while Jay was an offensive assistant. The Bucs went 57-55 during that span, including a win in Super Bowl XXXVII.
Jon's Raiders have put together a 3-2 record so far this season and will take their bye in Week 6.
