Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is considering surgery to repair the Lisfranc injury in his foot, which has plagued him since the preseason, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The estimated recovery time for the surgery is eight-to-10 weeks, according to Rapoport, who adds the procedure would come in the next week or two.

Newton was placed on injured reserve earlier this week and is expected to miss the rest of the campaign.

After missing just three games over his first seven seasons, the former league MVP is set to miss 16 contests over his past two campaigns, including this season.

The Auburn product struggled in two games this year, completing 56% of his passes while throwing for 572 yards, zero touchdowns, and three turnovers.

Newton is set to become a free agent in 2021. He's owed $18.6 million in 2020 with a cap hit of $21.1 million. That includes only $2 million in dead cap and $19.1 million in cap savings if Carolina decides to cut or trade him.
