Jenkins waived by Giants after tweeting insult to fan
The New York Giants waived cornerback Janoris Jenkins on Friday, the team announced.
Jenkins had drawn the ire of head coach Pat Shurmur for tweeting an insulting remark to a fan while sitting out of Wednesday's practice with an ankle injury.
On Thursday, the cornerback defended his actions, saying the use of "retard" in the tweet was "slang" that is "just part of my culture," according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan.
Jenkins is apparently happy to be out of New York.
Shortly after the release, Shurmur indicated that the cornerback's lack of contrition led to the decision to move on.
"From ownership to management to football operations, we felt it was in the best interests of the franchise and the player," Shurmur said, according to Kimberly Jones of NFL Network. "Obviously, what happened this week, and the refusal to acknowledge the inappropriate and offensive language, was the determining factor."
The former Pro Bowler used the offensive term in response to a fan criticizing him for lauding his personal statistics amid New York's nine-game losing streak.
Jenkins can be claimed off waivers on Monday, and any team that claims him would take on the remainder of his $10.15-million base salary, per Adam Caplan of Sirius XMNFL. The defender is under contract through next season.
Since giving up three touchdowns in Week 3, the 31-year-old Jenkins has been playing at a high level. He's recorded four interceptions and hasn't allowed a touchdown in the last 10 games, per PFF.
