The Philadelphia Eagles have ruled out tight end Zach Ertz for Sunday's crucial game against the New York Giants.

Ertz played through a rib injury during last week's win over the Dallas Cowboys. He told his team he could play through the pain, but Philadelphia considered whether there could be an internal organ issue in the event he took a hard hit, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

The 29-year-old went to the locker room during the first half against the Cowboys but managed to return and help the Eagles take a big step toward the NFC East title.

Head coach Doug Pederson said running back Jordan Howard has been cleared for contact and is expected to suit up in Week 17, according to Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports. Howard hasn't played since Week 9 due to a shoulder injury.

Right tackle Lane Johnson, who has missed the last two games with an ankle injury, is likely to miss the regular-season finale, reports Garafolo.

Philadelphia must match Dallas' result in Week 17 to secure a playoff spot.
