Report: Texans, Mercilus agree to 4-year, $54M extension

Troy Taormina / USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Texans and edge rusher Whitney Mercilus have agreed to a four-year, $54-million contract extension, the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson reports.

The deal contains $24.5 million in guaranteed money.

Mercilus has spent all eight seasons of his career in Houston. The 29-year-old has been particularly valuable to the Texans this year following the departure of Jadeveon Clowney and long-term injury to J.J. Watt.

The Illinois product has totaled 48 tackles and 7.5 sacks this year. He has 50 career sacks.

Mercilus was on track to become a free agent at the end of this season.
