The San Francisco 49ers believe linebacker Kwon Alexander could return from injured reserve early to play in the divisional round, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Alexander has been nursing a torn pectoral since Halloween. Similar to Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, who made his triumphant return in the wild-card round, Alexander is ahead of schedule in his recovery.

The 49ers have already activated Alexander's practice window. He, like Watt, would carry a risk of re-injury by coming back somewhat prematurely.

Alexander had 34 tackles, one interception, and half a sack in eight games before tearing his pectoral. He's in the first season of a four-year deal with the 49ers.

San Francisco is expected to get defensive end Dee Ford and safety Jaquiski Tartt back from injuries following its opening-round bye.
