Eagles fire Groh 1 day after saying OC's job was safe

The Philadelphia Eagles fired offensive coordinator Mike Groh and wide receivers coach Carson Walch on Thursday.

The dismissals come one day after Eagles head coach Doug Pederson told reporters that the pair did an outstanding job and would return next season, according to James Palmer of NFL Network.

"I apologize for any confusion that I created during yesterday's press conference. ... It was my intent not to comment on any of my staff during the ongoing evaluations because I wanted to be able to go through the process and communicate any decision directly with the individuals," Pederson said in a statement Thursday. "I did a poor job of explaining that the first time I was asked. I will continue to evaluate everything and consider all possibilities to improve our football team."

Groh's tenure in Philadelphia lasted three seasons. Originally hired in 2017 as the team's receivers coach, he was promoted to offensive coordinator a year later after Frank Reich left to join the Indianapolis Colts.

Walch was hired as receivers coach in 2019 and lasted one year.

Though the unit was decimated by injuries for much of the campaign, the Eagles ranked 14th in total offense and 12th in points per game this past season.

Two potential options to replace Groh are coaching veteran Jim Caldwell and former Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kevin O'Connell, a source told ESPN's Tim McManus.
