Broncos fire 1st-year OC Scangarello

The Denver Broncos fired offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello on Sunday after one season.

"After a lot of consideration and discussion after the season, I determined that a change at offensive coordinator ultimately would be best for our team," head coach Vic Fangio said in a statement. "We need to do everything we can to get better - in all areas - as we start working toward next year. Rich is a bright coach with a great future ahead of him. I appreciate all of his hard work and thank him for his contributions to the Broncos."

Scangarello joined Fangio's staff in the Mile High City after a two-year run as quarterbacks coach under Kyle Shanahan with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Broncos struggled offensively for much of the campaign but found a groove late after inserting rookie quarterback Drew Lock into the lineup. They finished the regular season ranked 28th in yards and points per game.

Former New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur is a strong candidate to replace Scangarello, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

Denver is coming off a 7-9 campaign and owns the 15th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
