Vernon Davis announces retirement in pregame skit with Gronkowski

Vernon Davis is calling time on his NFL career.

The Washington Redskins tight end announced his retirement in a video with Rob Gronkowski on Sunday, and he later confirmed his decision to ESPN's John Keim.

An official announcement will be made later in February.

The 36-year-old was an impending free agent after missing most of the 2019 campaign due to a concussion.

Davis spent the last four seasons with the Redskins. He started his career with the San Francisco 49ers, the team that drafted him sixth overall in 2006.

The veteran established himself as one of the league's best tight ends during nearly a decade in San Francisco before spending a season with the Denver Broncos in 2015 and winning a Super Bowl.

Among tight ends, Davis ranks sixth in career touchdowns (63) and ninth in catches (583).
