With just over a week until NFL free agency starts, this offseason is already teasing some era-defining quarterback movement.
That goes beyond Tom Brady, whose potential next move has been dominating airwaves since his final pass during the Patriots' brief playoff appearance in January. Longtime Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is also among the biggest QBs on the market, and Los Angeles is already planning to field a new starter in 2020.
But just who might that be? Oddsmakers have hung a few notable names to take the first snap in New England and Los Angeles next season.
Who will be the Patriots' next QB?
PLAYER | ODDS |
---|---|
Teddy Bridgewater | +300 |
Ryan Tannehill | +350 |
Marcus Mariota | +500 |
Andy Dalton | +600 |
Jarrett Stidham | +700 |
Derek Carr | +800 |
Jimmy Garoppolo | +1000 |
Nick Foles | +1400 |
Philip Rivers | +1400 |
Dak Prescott | +2000 |
Jameis Winston | +2000 |
Joe Flacco | +2500 |
Cody Kessler | +3300 |
Two of the three leading names on this list - Ryan Tannehill (+350) and Marcus Mariota (+500) - were teammates last year in Tennessee, which has emerged as the 5-1 favorite to sign Brady away if he leaves New England. Mariota's odds are worth watching, as his short-passing numbers were among the NFL's best in 2019, and he could finally be cast in a system that fits him under head coach Bill Belichick.
Jarrett Stidham (+700) is another interesting choice at long odds, notably because he's the only quarterback listed who's already on the Patriots' roster. After impressing during the 2019 preseason, he could be a compelling consolation prize if the quarterback market dries up.
The wild card is Jimmy Garoppolo (+1000), who started his career in New England and was a favorite of Belichick before eventually being traded to San Francisco. With his current team potentially interested in Brady, Garoppolo could become the future Hall of Famer's successor after all.
Who will be the Chargers' next QB?
PLAYER | ODDS |
---|---|
Tyrod Taylor | +150 |
Justin Herbert | +400 |
Teddy Bridgewater | +600 |
Tom Brady | +700 |
Tua Tagovailoa | +700 |
Andy Dalton | +900 |
Jameis Winston | +1200 |
Marcus Mariota | +1200 |
Jordan Love | +1600 |
Jake Fromm | +1800 |
Ryan Tannehill | +2500 |
Colin Kaepernick | +10000 |
Eli Manning | +50000 |
When we first broke down the Chargers' QB odds three weeks ago, Tyrod Taylor (+150) was the recommendation as a rare favorite worth playing in a typically volatile market. He's still the runaway top choice for a reason: Taylor is familiar with the system and has proven himself as a competent or even underrated starting quarterback.
Justin Herbert (+400), Tua Tagovailoa (+700), and Jordan Love (+1600) all seem like interesting bets at long odds, but good luck picking one. They'd also need to usurp Taylor to become the Week 1 starter, which isn't guaranteed with the red flags attached to each prospect prior to the draft.
The only other bets worth making are Brady (+700) - who's long been linked to L.A. and comes with a surprisingly nice price here - and Mariota (+1200), who some are already predicting as the Chargers' next starting passer. His skill set would fit nicely with Los Angeles' possession receivers, and he could sell tickets in a region featuring strong support for the Hawaiian-born star.
