Report: Raiders interested in Mariota as veteran backup QB
The Las Vegas Raiders are interested in signing quarterback Marcus Mariota in free agency this offseason, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports.
The Raiders are more likely to target a "veteran 1B backup" quarterback than pursue a big name like Tom Brady, according to Garafolo, who added that both Mariota and the Raiders will have other options this offseason.
The Raiders still have starter Derek Carr under contract for three more seasons. Mike Glennon, DeShone Kizer, and Nathan Peterman were Carr's backups in 2019, and Glennon is scheduled to become a free agent.
Mariota was the Tennessee Titans' starting quarterback from 2015 until Week 6 of the 2019 season when he was benched during a shutout loss that dropped the team to 2-4. Ryan Tannehill took over and led the Titans to a 7-3 record down the stretch and then playoff upsets over the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens.
After the season, the 26-year-old Mariota said he has "no doubts" that he can be an NFL starter again.
