Justin Herbert drafted 6th overall by Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers selected quarterback Justin Herbert out of Oregon No. 6 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Chargers general manager Tom Telesco expressed interest in Herbert early in the process, but - as he usually does - kept his first-round plans close to the vest.

Multiple reports surfaced in recent weeks that the Chargers didn't view Tyrod Taylor as a bridge quarterback and wanted the veteran to start under center for 2020 and potentially beyond.

Herbert was an accomplished passer with the Ducks. He completed 67% of his passes for 32 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2019. The 6-foot-6 signal-caller will presumably compete with Taylor in training camp as a rookie.

He remains a first-round prospect, as he would have been had he declared as a junior, though returning to school didn't do anything to boost his stock. He'll need to be brought along as a developmental quarterback early on in his pro career. The upside is there, but patience may be required before he's potentially able to make the most of his raw talents.
