Jamal Adams is not expected to participate in April's virtual offseason program as the New York Jets have yet to express any official interest in extending the star safety, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Adams is eyeing a new contract and called out New York's management last season for shopping him before the deadline, causing a temporary rift between the two sides.

Speaking in February, general manager Joe Douglas said he wanted to make the former first-round pick a "Jet for life." This came months after the team reportedly discussed a potential deal with the Dallas Cowboys.

The 24-year-old has quickly emerged as one of the NFL's premier safeties since entering the league, and is likely angling to be among the highest-paid players at his position. He accumulated 75 tackles, 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and two defensive touchdowns last season en route to a first-team All-Pro selection and his second straight Pro Bowl berth.

The Jets drafted Adams sixth overall in 2017. He's signed through the 2020 season, and the team can exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie deal to keep him under control through 2021.

Virtual offseason periods for clubs can begin April 20, though no on-field work can take place until all 32 club facilities are reopened.
