New York Giants defensive lineman Leonard Williams has signed his franchise tag, the team announced Wednesday.
The one-year tender will pay Williams a salary north of $16 million. The Giants can still negotiate an extension until the July 15 deadline for tagged players to ink long-term deals.
The Giants acquired Williams from the New York Jets at the 2019 trade deadline in exchange for a third-round draft pick plus a 2021 fifth-rounder. He posted 26 tackles and 0.5 sacks in eight outings for the Giants, though he was more proficient in generating pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Williams, the sixth overall pick of the 2015 draft, has 17.5 sacks over his five-year career. He tallied a career-high seven sacks in his sophomore campaign.
