Report: Saints finalizing 1-year deal with Jameis Winston
The New Orleans Saints are finalizing a one-year contract with free-agent quarterback Jameis Winston, sources told Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports.
The deal is expected to wrap up shortly now that the NFL draft is over, reports Robinson, who adds it should be an economical union for the Saints as they face a cap crunch.
Winston, 26, led the NFL in passing last season with 5,109 yards but threw a league-high 30 interceptions.
The Saints lost backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to the Carolina Panthers in free agency but retained restricted free agent Taysom Hill. New Orleans also drafted Tommy Stevens in the seventh round Saturday.
Winston is expected to compete with Hill for the right to be Drew Brees' immediate backup and will have a shot to eventually succeed Brees, who's reportedly already signed a deal with NBC to join its broadcast booth at the end of his playing career.
