Reports: Browns to exercise 5th-year options on Garrett, Njoku
The Cleveland Browns will exercise the fifth-year options on star pass-rusher Myles Garrett and tight end David Njoku, a source told ESPN's Jake Trotter.
Those players were two of Cleveland's three first-round picks in the 2017 draft. Jabrill Peppers, the other first-round selection, was traded to the New York Giants last offseason.
Garrett - the first overall pick in 2017 - was in the midst of a dominant 2019 campaign but was suspended for the remainder of the season after ripping off Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph's helmet and hitting him in the head with it during Week 11.
The Browns' decision to pick up Njoku's option is somewhat surprising. The tight end injured his wrist and suffered a concussion on the same play in Week 2 last season and played in just two more games during the campaign.
Additionally, Cleveland made Austin Hooper the league's highest-paid tight end this offseason and then selected fellow TE Harrison Bryant in the fourth round of the 2020 draft.
