Rivers to coach at Alabama high school after playing career
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers will become the head football coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, after the end of his playing career, according to Ben Thomas of AL.com.
Rivers is embarking on a one-year contract with the Colts, though he hasn't shut the door on playing beyond 2020. The 38-year-old previously revealed his desire to coach at the high school level once he retires from the NFL.
"My dad was my high school football coach, so I want to coach my boys and I want to coach young boys down the road, so I do know what's next when my playing time's over, so we did talk about it a little bit," he said in March.
Rivers has nine children. His oldest son, Gunner, will enter the sixth grade in the fall.
The longtime Los Angeles Chargers signal-caller has held football clinics at St. Michael for the last two summers, and previously said the school aligned with his athletic, spiritual, and academic beliefs.
St. Michael athletic director Paul Knapstein plans to coach the football team until Rivers is ready to take over.
