Former NFL wideout Reche Caldwell shot and killed in Tampa
Former NFL wide receiver Reche Caldwell was shot and killed Saturday in Tampa, his mother told the Tampa Bay Times. He was 41.
Local police confirmed in a news release that officers responded to a call about a shooting late in the evening and found a man in his 40s with a gunshot wound.
Drafted out of Florida by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft, Caldwell spent four seasons with the Chargers before joining the New England Patriots. He enjoyed his most productive NFL season with the Patriots in 2006, catching 61 passes for 760 yards and four touchdowns to lead the team in all three categories.
Caldwell appeared on a few more rosters after leaving the Patriots, finishing his pro career in 2008. He was arrested on multiple occasions over the following years and was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison in 2015 after pleading guilty to a drug charge.
