Report: Broncos expressed interest in Matthews, couldn't agree to deal

The Denver Broncos recently expressed interest in signing veteran pass-rusher Clay Matthews in an attempt to fill the void left by Von Miller's ankle injury, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Unfortunately for Denver, the former Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams outside linebacker reportedly told the club he's "not going to play" this season.

Matthews' agent, Ryan Williams, released a statement shortly after the report, clarifying that the veteran could not agree to terms with the Broncos but remains open to playing in 2020.

Denver is looking to add a veteran piece to its defense after Miller went down in practice on Tuesday. Though the Broncos will place him on injured reserve and reports indicate he'll miss the entire 2020 campaign, they aren't ready to rule their All-Pro rusher out for the year.

Matthews started 13 games for the Rams in 2019 and amassed eight sacks along with two forced fumbles. The team released him in March after one season.

The 34-year-old spent the first 10 years of his career in Green Bay, earning six Pro Bowl nods.
