Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith injured his calf in the second quarter and didn't return to Sunday's 23-15 win over the San Francisco 49ers.

X-rays on Smith's leg were negative, head coach Ron Rivera said, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.

Dwayne Haskins replaced the veteran passer for the rest of the game. Rivera said he turned to Haskins "out of an abundance of caution."

Smith exited the field with the team's medical staff to be evaluated in the locker room prior to the end of the first half. He was listed as questionable to return.

The 36-year-old struggled to move the ball consistently against San Francisco prior to his exit, throwing for 57 yards and an interception.

Meanwhile, Haskins finished his relief appearance with 7-for-12 passing and 51 yards.

Smith entered the contest with three wins in his first four starts since returning to the field after what looked like a career-ending leg injury in 2018.

Washington already lost quarterback Kyle Allen for the season after he dislocated his ankle in Week 9.
