Mariota makes strong Raiders debut on TNF after Carr suffers groin injury
Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr suffered a groin injury while scrambling on a third-down play in the first quarter of Thursday night's overtime loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Carr was ruled out for the remainder of the game as the second half began. The veteran starter was replaced by Marcus Mariota, who hadn't played a snap prior to Week 15 after joining the Raiders in the offseason.
Mariota put together an impressive performance to keep the Raiders in the contest after Carr exited. He threw for 226 yards and one touchdown against one interception and added another 88 yards and a score on the ground.
Carr went 3-for-5 for 53 yards and led the Raiders to a field goal before exiting.
Mariota, the Tennessee Titans' No. 2 draft pick in 2015, last played in Week 17 of the 2019 season. He started the first six games of that campaign for the Titans before being benched for Ryan Tannehill.
The 27-year-old backup threw for 13,207 career passing yards and 76 touchdowns against 44 interceptions in 61 starts in Tennessee. He also has 1,399 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground.
