ESPN retracts report of Dolphins dismissing Gailey
ESPN retracted its report that the Miami Dolphins parted ways with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey on Monday after the story was incorrectly attributed to Adam Schefter.
The network issued an apology after reporting the news on its online and TV platforms:
ESPN published an incorrect story on Monday involving Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.
The story has been removed from ESPN.com, and replaced with this correction. The story was also mentioned on the 1 p.m. ET edition of SportsCenter.
No ESPN reporters reported on Gailey or the Dolphins, or were involved in the error, which was made internally.
ESPN regrets the error.
Gailey, 68, came out of retirement last offseason to join the Dolphins as offensive coordinator under Brian Flores. He was tasked with developing prized rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who struggled and was benched in favor of Ryan Fitzpatrick multiple times after taking over as the starter in Week 8.
Tagovailoa finished the season with 1,814 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions through the air. Three of his interceptions came in Week 17 against the Buffalo Bills when Miami could have clinched a playoff berth with a win. Tagovailoa completed 64.1% of his passes on the season and posted a passer rating of 87.1.
The Dolphins ranked 22nd in total yardage and 15th in points in 2020. Despite winning 10 games, they missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.
