Bucs to be 1st team to play Super Bowl at home
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will make history at Super Bowl LV.
The Bucs will become the first team to play the Super Bowl at their home stadium after beating the Green Bay Packers 31-26 in Sunday's NFC Championship Game.
"Home Super Bowl for the first time in NFL history puts a lot of cool things in perspective," said Tom Brady, per James Palmer of NFL Network. "Anytime you're the first doing something, it’s usually a pretty good thing."
No team previously achieved that feat over the last 55 years. The Minnesota Vikings were the most recent club to come close, losing in the NFC title game to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2017 season to miss out on a chance at playing in Super Bowl LII.
However, the Bucs won't have as big of a home-field advantage as they usually would at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The NFL is allowing 22,000 fans - including 7,500 vaccinated health care workers - to attend the game. The capacity at Tampa Bay's stadium is 65,890.
