Lovie Smith is back in the NFL.
The former pro and college head coach has agreed to terms with the Houston Texans to become the team's new defensive coordinator, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports.
Smith was the Chicago Bears' head coach from 2004 to 2012 and led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2014 to 2015 before coaching at Illinois from 2016 to 2018. He also held the defensive coordinator position with the then-St. Louis Rams from 2001 to 2003.
The Texans' coaching staff is taking shape with the move. David Culley was introduced as the team's new head coach Friday, and Tim Kelly is expected to be retained as the offensive coordinator.
Houston is also reportedly targeting veteran quarterback Josh McCown for Culley's staff.
