NFL relaxes jersey rules, expanding number options for players

The NFL approved a change to its jersey rules Wednesday, allowing players at certain positions to wear new numbers, according to ESPN's Kevin Seifert.

As of the 2021 season, players at the following positions will be permitted to wear these numbers:

• Quarterbacks, punters, and kickers: 1–19
• Running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends: 1–49, 80–89
• Defensive backs: 1–49
• Linebackers: 1–59, 90–99
• Offensive linemen: 50–79
• Defensive linemen: 50–79, 90–99

Several NFL stars, including Jalen Ramsey and Ezekiel Elliott, publicly supported the change. Ramsey wore No. 8 at Florida State, while Elliott sported No. 15 at Ohio State, but both needed to switch upon entering the league.

The Kansas City Chiefs proposed the change after encountering issues this past season with players being promoted from the practice squad who were given numbers the franchise has already retired.

Players who change their number for the 2021 season must buy out the remaining inventory of their existing jersey, according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports. Those who request a change as of the 2022 season can switch numbers at no cost.
