Report: Mahomes undergoing surgery to repair turf toe
Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a torn plantar plate, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The quarterback reportedly faces several months of rehab but is expected to make a full recovery.
The signal-caller had been playing through the injury, commonly known as turf toe, since the divisional round against the Cleveland Browns on Jan. 17, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com.
Mahomes was still injured for the Chiefs' 31-9 Super Bowl LV loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. He threw for 270 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions in the championship game. It was the first contest where Kansas City hadn't registered a touchdown and failed to reach double-digit points with Mahomes under center.
The pivot downplayed the injury's severity after the Super Bowl.
"I can't say the toe was a problem when I played two weeks ago (in the AFC Championship Game), and I played well on it," Mahomes said after Sunday's loss, per ESPN’s Adam Teicher. "Anytime you play football, you have to battle through injuries."
The 25-year-old took plenty of punishment during Kansas City’s postseason run. He couldn't finish the team’s divisional-round matchup after being placed in concussion protocol. However, the injury didn't appear to be a factor in the Chiefs' conference championship win over the Buffalo Bills on Jan. 24, with Mahomes throwing for 325 yards and three touchdowns.
He ended his fourth NFL campaign racking up 4,740 passing yards and 38 touchdowns against six interceptions, with a 66% pass completion rate.
