The New Orleans Saints used their franchise tag on safety Marcus Williams, the team announced Tuesday.
New Orleans is currently $42.4 million over the projected cap of $185 million, according to Spotrac. The team will therefore need to make some significant cuts or restructures to accommodate Williams' $10.5-million one-year tender.
The 24-year-old has been a consistent presence in the Saints' secondary since being drafted in the second round in 2017, starting 60 of a possible 64 regular-season games.
Williams racked up three interceptions, 59 total tackles, and seven pass defenses in 2020.
