Jets bolster backfield with Michael Carter in 4th

The New York Jets selected running back Michael Carter out of North Carolina in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, 107th overall.

The Jets have attacked rebuilding their offense with their first four picks of the draft, selecting quarterback Zach Wilson and guard Alijah Vera-Tucker at No. 2 and No. 14 overall, respectively, and taking wide receiver Elijah Moore in the second round.

New York averaged 105.2 rushing yards per game last season, which was 22nd in the NFL. The only established running back on the roster is Tevin Coleman, who signed a one-year deal with New York in March.

Carter - who produced consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to finish his career in North Carolina - should push backups Ty Johnson and La'Mical Perine for immediate playing time alongside Coleman.

Carter possesses nearly every trait you'd want in a young running back. He's quick and elusive in the open field, he displays excellent body control, and he has plenty of experience as a pass-catcher out of the backfield. His route running and hands are among the best at the position in his class. However, the former Tar Heel's size may prevent him from being a true NFL workhorse. Height deficiencies aside, Carter is a talented prospect who plays hard on every snap. He could be a mid-round steal who consistently wins matchups against opposing linebackers.
