Chargers bolster offensive line by drafting Rashawn Slater at No. 13

The Los Angeles Chargers selected offensive tackle Rashawn Slater out of Northwestern 13th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Landing a blindside protector for sophomore quarterback Justin Herbert was arguably the Chargers' top priority entering the draft.

Slater should slide in as a starter at left tackle from Day 1, taking over for 2019 third-round pick Trey Pipkins.

L.A. has already heavily invested in its offensive line this offseason, making former Green Bay Packers standout Corey Linsley the NFL's highest-paid center in free agency.

Ideal position: Left tackle

Slater opted out of the 2020 campaign, but he showcased just how talented a prospect he his prior to last season. The athletic lineman was the only player who consistently shut down Chase Young at Ohio State, an impressive feat considering Young's play as an NFL rookie last year. Slater is the cleanest pass-blocker in this class thanks to his processing speed, smooth feet, and lateral agility. The only true knocks on his game involve measurables, as his size and arm length are below average for the position. Still, Slater can play - and dominate - at left tackle all day.
